How to Add or Remove Admins on Mac

Add Admin to Mac Using System Settings

The easiest way to add a new admin to your Mac is going into your System Preferences. You can access this by clicking on the Apple logo in the top left corner and choosing System Preferences from the dropdown menu.

Once you’ve done this, follow these steps to complete the admin setup process.

Step 1: Open Settings > Users and Groups > Add User.

Step 2: Enter your admin username and password > Click on Unlock.

Step 3: Add the details > Select Administrator > Click on Create User.

Remove Mac Admins Using System Preferences

At some stage, you might need to remove an admin that previously had access to your Mac. If you want to do this using System Settings, the process is pretty straightforward.

Open Settings > Users and Groups > Click the Info icon next to Admin name > Turn off Allow guests to log in to this computer > Click on Ok.

How to Remove Users on Mac Terminal

You can also remove users on your Mac by using the Terminal on your device. These steps will show you how to do it; follow them as they’re laid out.

Step 1: Open Terminal and then type the following command. Enter the username of the admin you wish to remove from your Mac.

sudo /usr/bin/dscl . -delete "/Users/[username]"

Step 2: Press Enter and then macOS will prompt you to add your admin password.
